A commercial deep clean combines several methods, each matched to a surface: degreasing for kitchens, descaling for washrooms, steam cleaning, scrubbing or shampooing for carpets, machine scrubbing for hard floors, high-level work for dust above head height, and fogging or misting where extra disinfection is needed. Choosing the right method for each area is what makes a deep clean last. This guide explains each one.
Deep cleaning methods at a glance
Deep cleaning methods are the techniques used to remove built-up dirt, grease, limescale and dust that routine cleaning leaves behind. The method depends on the surface, how dirty it is and how quickly the area must be back in use. This guide is for facilities and office managers who want to understand what a deep clean quote actually includes. For the service, see deep cleaning in London.
- Which method is used where?
- It is chosen per surface at the site survey.
- Is fogging the same as deep cleaning?
- No. Fogging disinfects; surfaces are cleaned first.
- Can high areas be included?
- Yes, up to 12 to 14 metres with IPAF-licensed staff.
Methods and where they are used
| Method | Used for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Degreasing | Kitchens, appliances, extraction areas | Breaks down grease so it can be wiped and rinsed away |
| Descaling | Taps, sinks, toilets, showers | Removes limescale from hard-water areas |
| Steam cleaning | Carpets and some hard surfaces | Lifts embedded dirt using heat and moisture |
| Scrubbing and shampooing | Heavily soiled or high-traffic carpets | Loosens dirt, stains and odours from fibres |
| Machine floor scrubbing | Hard floors, warehouse and corridor floors | Cleans edges and wide areas evenly |
| High-level cleaning | Beams, ducting, light fittings, high windows | Removes dust that falls back onto surfaces below |
| Fogging and misting | Whole rooms after illness or before reopening | Spreads disinfectant across surfaces after cleaning |
The order matters
Deep cleans work top to bottom and dirty to clean: high-level dust first, then surfaces and fittings, then floors last, so nothing falls onto areas already cleaned. Disinfection with fogging or misting comes after cleaning, because dirt and grease shield germs from disinfectant.
Safety and disruption
Freshly cleaned floors can be a slip risk while they dry, and disinfectants are hazardous substances controlled under COSHH, so timing and access are agreed in advance. Work is scheduled around your opening hours, including evenings and weekends where needed.
